Mary Gregory 3 (5 April 1813-9 May 1865) was the fourth child of John Wesley and Elizabeth Young Gregory. She married George W. Spencer. Mary is buried at Mount Vernon Cemetery, Union, South Carolina.
Lettice (Lettie) Gregory 3 (July 1821-January 1902) was the daughter of John Wesley and Elizabeth Young Gregory. She married, first, Joseph Lyles; and after his death and the death of her sister, Mary Gregory Spencer, she married, second, George W. Spencer. Lettie is also buried at Mount Vernon Cemetery.
James M. Gregory 3, son of John Wesley and Elizabeth Young Gregory, was born ca. 1817, Union District, S.C., and died 1881, Mineola, Wood County, Texas during a typhoid epidemic. He married Sarah Elvira Gregory, daughter of Benjamin J. and Elizabeth Crosby Jeter Gregory, after 1850 and before her father’s will was written in 1852. Benjamin objected – probably because the two were cousins – but adjusted to the marriage before his death. (See transcript of Benjamin’s will for further information.) Dr. James M. Gregory was ten years Sarah’s senior and was living alone at the 1850 census (p. 33, Union County). Sarah Elvira was aged twenty and living with her parents at that time (p. 42, Union County). James and Sarah Elvira lived in Union County, South Carolina, apparently until late 1855. This is concluded because two deeds recorded in Union County were executed in 1855. In l856, they moved to Louisville, Winston County, Miss. In the late 1860’s, they moved to Kosciusko, Attala County, Miss. Following Sarah’s death, James lived with his daughter, Mattie, and her husband, John Grady, who moved to Mineola, Wood County, Texas in 1881.
For more information regarding James M. Gregory, see the account of Sarah Elvira (Gregory) Gregory.
NOTE: Additional information on Edward M. Gregory and his descendants was provided by Jean L. Cooper, Associate Director, Interlibrary Services, University of Virginia Library.
Edward M. Gregory 2 (ca. 1784-12 December 1854) was the fifth child of John and Margaret Gregory. His wife was Nancy -?- (ca. 1785-ca. 1860). Solomon, Isaac and W.H. Gregory posted $3,000 bond to administer his estate in February 1855.
Edward is buried on John Gregory land in the family cemetery. This was plotted by GPS and then plotted to Deedmapper on June 01, 2001 during the Gregory reunion by Reg, Ben, Don and assistance of Mike Becknell, President of the Union County Geneological Society and the Historical Society. The location of the cemetery is on John’s land on the north side of Neal’s Shoal and the west side of Gregory Creek. John’s grant is on both sides of Gregory Creek and adjacent to an earlier plot to John. John sells five acres to Alexander Cain. Cain is located on the west side of Gregory’s Creek and north side of Neal’s Shoal Rd. Robert Gregory’s grant is also in the area. A second cemetery is plotted by GPS and is called the Cain Cemetery located in the east corner of Robert’s land and possibly part of the five acres sold by John. This land is all meeting here. John will marry Rhoda Cain after the death of John’s wife and Alexander Cain. Soloman Gregory will later be in this area. The GPS plotting will uncover another Gregory descendant and family. Soloman Gregory’s sister Margarite are here and Lil Soloman is found with his family.
Edward and Nancy’s children were: Thomas; Jeremiah D.; Ansel G.; Sarah; Margaret; Solomon; Jarrett; William Tillman; Edward Harrison Jr.; and Isaac.
Thomas Gregory 3 (ca. 1815) was the first son of Edward and Nancy Gregory. He apparently did not marry. We find him living alone, as a planter, in the 1850 census. He had twenty “improved” acres and twelve “unimproved.” His stock included three horses, three beef cattle, two sheep and five swine. The value of his livestock was $98. He continued to live alone in 1860 but, in 1870, was living with Jarrett and Anna Gregory (his brother and sister-in-law). His grave has not been located.
Jeremiah D. (Jerry) Gregory 3 (22 October 1816-7 August 1905) married twice. His first wife was Ann (Nancy) Mitchell (1819-1860). His second wife was Sarah (Sallie) Jolly (7 October 1827-12 June 1911). They were married circa 1866-1867. She was the daughter of John Jolly (ca. 1804) and Nancy Jolly (ca. 1808-16 April 1879).
Jeremiah and Nancy had at least one child, Eugenia. She appears with Nancy and Jeremiah in the 1850 census. In 1860, Jeremiah and Eugenia are without Nancy. Jerry is a farmer with real estate valued at $1,000 and personal property valued at $230. Eugenia is a student.
In 1870 Jerry is married (1867) to Sallie. Other occupants of the house include Eugenia, Isbell (age 13), Samuel, Martha, Sallie and Bee.
Isbell is probably the second child of Jeremiah and Nancy, who was living with other relatives in 1860. In 1880, Eugenia and Isbell are gone from the home but Jeremiah’s second family remains.
In 1900, Jerry and Sallie are alone. He is listed at 97 years old and his birthdate is listed as October, 1802. His tombstone reads 22 October 1816. The consensus is that the latter is correct. Sallie’s birthdate is listed as October, 1827. The number of years married is thirty-three, which means the couple probably married in 1866-67. Sallie is listed as the mother of four children.
In 1900, Jeremiah – apparently aware of his advancing years – deeded to his sons, Bee (Barton B.) and Samuel Gregory, “for love and affection and $5 from my sons (above named), and in consideration of advances made to me for my support in my old age: all my right, title and interest in that tract of land bounded on the north side by the road leading from B. Crawford’s to Sims, a line known as Joe Crawford Line, adjoining land being now owned by John Gillian; John Smith Line, Nicholson’s Line (formerly B. Crawford Line); A. Levy Palmer and Goings Line (formerly J. Jolly Line); and Mrs. Fannie Spears Line (formerly Widow Edwards Line)”.
Jeremiah and Ann Mitchell had two children: Eugenia; Isbell. Jeremiah and Sarah Jolly had four children: Samuel; Martha; Sallie; Barton.
Eugenia Gregory 4 (ca. 1849), first child of Jeremiah and Ann, was not married as of 1880. She appears in Jonesville as the unmarried mother of two children, Laura (age four), and William (age five). William was born circa 1975; Laura, circa 1976.
Samuel Gregory 4 (12 January 1866) was the eldest son of Jeremiah and Sallie Gregory. He is living in Pinckney Township, Union County, in 1900. His wife, Ella (May 1875) is apparently his second wife, as the census says the couple had been married six years and she was the mother of one child. There are two children in the household. The eldest, Aubrey, was born in May 1890. The youngest, Caurey (Carrie?), a daughter, was born March 1896.
