An Ansel Gregory is buried at Mount Tabor Cemetery, Union County, South Carolina. The Ansel buried at Mount Tabor was born in 1800 and died in 1874. Dan and his brother Will built houses across the road from each other and next to their father, James Vance Clark (25 May 1862 -11 August 1920) who came from the mountains of Haywood County (Canton) North Carolina and married Lou Reynolds in the Wilksburg Community of Chester County. They along with Will and Daisy Clark and their extended families farmed a few hundred acres in the far northwestern area of Chester County, SC that is known as the Wilksburg Community.

Dan and Will built their own modest frame houses near their father, James V. Clark, and mother, Lou Reynolds, off Mt. Pleasant Road. There, they raised their crops, animals, and children. Almost everything needed was raised or made on the farm with the exceptions of gun powder, shoes, kerosene, refined sugar, salt, vinegar, matches, tin, glass, tools, and nails. Cotton, corn, potatoes, and sugar cane were the main staple crops while garden favorites like tomatoes, squash, beans, okra, turnips, and collard greens were grown for the table. Food was prepared on a wood stove. Perishable food was stored in a cooler at the 'bottom of the hill' in the natural spring. Their tin roofed house was heated with a home-made fifty-five gallon steel drum, wood burning heater and had no insulation. Since there was no running water, water was hauled in hand drawn wagons or carried by hand from a owned in common, hand dug well, located in front of James and Lou Gregory's house. Rain run off from the tin roofs was collected in fifty-five gallon steel drums and was used to wash clothes in two out side wash pots. Tobacco was grown and processed into 'twist' (chewing tobacco) and smoking tobacco for hand rolled cigarettes or home made pipes. Cows were raised for milk and meat along with pigs, chickens, and guineas. Mules were kept to plow the fields, pull wagons, and give children rides. Hunting and fishing supplemented the tables with meat; while providing sporting activities for the 'men folk'. Bee hives were kept for honey. And Lula smoked their meat in the smoke house. Both Dan and Will's families were active members of the Wilksburg Baptist Church. Dan was instrumental in establishing a church cemetery, dedicated in 1957; and was the first person buried in it upon his death in 1958. Dan Carnelson Clark died after a heart attack at 73 years of age while visiting relatives in Waynesville, NC. Jessie Lula died at 88 years of age in the Chester County Hospital after a short illness. Dan and Lula are buried side by side in the Wilksburg Baptist Church Cemetery along with their son Alfred L Clark. Dan and Lula had 13 children - nine daughters and four sons: Myrtle Inez; Edward Waldo; Josie Leon; Leo Docie; Marion James; Luther Love; Alfred Lufate; Margaret Cinderella; Maude Ruth; Cora Louise; Wilodean; Lois Bernice; Florence Evelyn.

She is buried in Brushy Fork Baptist Church Cemetery with her sister Cora near their maternal grand parents, Marion T. and Elmira Gregory.

Florence Evelyn Clark (19 February 1933), the thirteen child of Dan and Jessie Lula Gregory Clark, married Hugh Miller Bailey.

Daisy Estelle Gregory (20 February 1892-12 February 1980), the seventh child of Marion Tillman and Elmira Stone Gregory, married William Isaac Clark (20 December 1888-15 March 1967), the brother of Dan Carnelson Clark, who married her sister Jessie Lula. Daisy lived off Mt. Pleasant Road, across the road from her sister Jessie Lula. Will and Daisy are buried side by side in Wilksburg Baptist Church Cemetery along with their son, Alonzo Isaac. Daisy and William Clark had thirteen children: Annie; Albert; Lindhart; Theodore; Ivory; Atha; Ethel; Alonzo Isaac; Betty; Mable; Stewart (5 October 1919-11 December 1923) and twin sons who died 30 December 1916 and are buried with their brother Stewart near their maternal grandparents, Marion Tillman and Elmira Gregory, at the Brushy Fork Baptist Church Cemetery, Chester County, SC.

Mamie Lee Gregory (4 June 1898-15 December 1973), the tenth child of Marion Tillman and Elmira Stone Gregory, married James O. Ferrell on 2 August 1915 in Chester County Court House, Chester, South Carolina. She is buried in the Armenia United Methodist Church Cemetery, Chester County, SC. James and Mamie Lee Gregory Ferrell had two children: Doris; Ruby.

Doris Ferrell (9 February 1925-12 March 2001), the first child of James and Mamie Lee Gregory Ferrell, was born in Chester, SC. She was a homemaker. She married C.B. Trotter. She died in the Chester County Hospital, Dchester, SC and is buried in Greenlawn cemetera, Great Falls, South Carolina. Doris and CB had seven children: Brady; Michael; Phillip; Karen May; Donda; Carol; Sonja.

Donda Trotter married -?- Sims.

Carol Trotter married -?- Walden.

Sonja Trotter married -?- Wilson.

Ruby Ferrell, the second child of James and Mamie Lee Gregory Ferrell, married -?- Campbell.

Edward Harrison Gregory, Jr. (8 November 1833-1 May 1892) was the tenth child of Edward and Nancy. He married Jane -?- (1 September 1831-7 July 1890). Both are buried in what is termed the Gregory Cemetery #2, behind the home of Mauda and Vera Gregory near Fairview Church, Union County. Edward and Jane were probably married about 1857, as their eldest child, Edward, was one year old in the 1860 census. Also listed in the 1860 census is an infant, Cornelius, age 3 months. Edward (listed as Harrison in this census) and Jane apparently changed their minds about the name or the census enumerator recorded the child's name incorrectly because he was really Charles N. Gregory. This family is not to be found in any census after 1860. It is possible that they moved away after the War and returned. There is no marked grave for the son, Edward, but Charles N. Gregory (2 March 1860-24 December 1894) rests beside his parents.

Isaac Gregory was the eleventh and yougest child of Edward and Nancy Gregory. Though numerous leads have been followed, all efforts at identifying him have been unsuccessful.

Sarah (Sally) Gregory was the sixth child of John and Margaret Gregory. The only record available on Sarah is a Deed of Gift from her father to her son. Within this document, John gives to Thomas Gregory, grandson, "son of my daughter, Sarah Gregory, fifty acres between Edward's plantation and my old plantation". Jeremiah and Tillman Gregory, John's sons, witnessed the deed which was executed 13 May 1812 and recorded 18 July 1812. The dower was relinquished by Rhoda, wife of John.

Note: Correction to John Jeremiah Gregory and his family were provided by Catherine Gregory of Woodside, New York.

John Jeremiah Gregory (ca. 1790-18 January 1868) was the eighth child of John and Margaret Gregory. His wife was Naomi Steen (ca. 1790).

In 1850, Jeremiah was listed as a planter with real estate valued at $1,800. He owned 300 acres of land (75 improved, 225 unimproved), three horses, four milk cows, three "other cattle", two working oxen, twelve sheep and eight swine. The value of his livestock was $350. Nancy was the only child at home and was listed as sixteen years old. In 1860, Jeremiah and Naomi are alone. His real estate is now valued at $3,000 and his personal property at $500.

Jeremiah and Naomi were the parents of at least five children: Jefferson; Tresvant; Pearciful; Nancy; and Andrew Ferdinand. There is some evidence that a daughter, Naomi, died before her father.

Jefferson (John Jefferson) Gregory (ca. 1814, Union County, S.C.) was the eldest known child of Jeremiah and Naomi. His wife was Jane -?- (December 1823). The couple had seven children, of whom five lived until adulthood: Charles, ca. 1844; William, 1848; Virginia C., January 1851; Jane Aurelia (Amelia), January 1851; Nancy, ca. 1853; Mary, ca. 1857; and James E.

James E. Gregory (28 May 1858-16 July 1921) married Ellen A. -?- (6 December 1866-24 August 1928). James E. and Ellen are buried at Rosemont Cemetery, Union, South Carolina.

Tresvant Gregory (13 August 1822-30 June 1899), second child of Jeremiah and Naomi, was a farmer and carpenter. The name, Tresvant, is unusual, but it is an old and respected French Huguenot name. Tresvant's wife was Lavinia Koon (20 May 1826-12 October 1899). He was a Confederate veteran. Both are buried at Beulah Baptist Church, Union County. Their children: John Henderson; Robert G.; Mary; Nancie; Sophia Virginia; Laura; and Ferdinand.

Sophia, age 19, Laura, age 16, and Ferdinand, age 8, were at home in 1880. There is no information on the remainder of the family after 1880.

John Henderson Gregory (3 March 1852-16 October 1924) married Emma Eubanks (1 March 1858-5 November 1939). Both are buried at Beulah. According to the 1900 census, John Henderson and Emma were married ca. 1875 and had four children. Two were still alive in 1900. In 1880, there were two children in the home: John T., age 3, and Sallie, age 1. There is a child, Frances (1880-1883) buried at Beulah. She is probably one of the two deceased children. Neither John T. nor Sallie were with their parents in 1900. A son, Preston (October 1890), does appear.

Pearciful (Pearcy) Gregory (dates unknown) was the third child of Jeremiah and Naomi. The little that is known about her is found in Jeremiah's will, from which is quoted:

"I give to my son, Tresvant Gregory, my Negro girl, named Dealy, together with her future issue and increase, and also the sum of one hundred dollars, in trust, nevertheless for the use, benefit and behoof of my daughter, Pearciful Kerk, wife of Benjamin F. Kerk, for and during her natural life and, at her death, to go to such child or children as she may leave surviving her, the child or children of the deceased parent taking the share to which the parent would have been entitled if living."

Pearciful doesn't show up in the 1850 census, so it must be assumed that she was married (or the enumerator missed her) at that time. Benjamin Kerk does not appear either.

NOTE: Corrections to Nancy Gregory's family were provided by Catherine Gregory.

Nancy Gregory (ca. 1832-?) was the fourth child of Jeremiah and Naomi Gregory. Nancy married Thomas Steen (10 December 1828-4 March 1897), a farmer of Santuc, Union County, South Carolina, on 12 December 1852. Thomas was the son of Col. Gideon Steen (5 March 1796-26 March 1855) and Naomi Townsend Steen. The 1880 Federal Census for Santuc, Union County, South Carolina has farmer Thomas Steen (10 December 1828-4 March 1897) as the husband of Nancy Steen, and includes their children still living at home: George, 16; Virginia, 15; James, 13; Nancy, 9; Eva, 7. Nancy is buried in the Steen Family Cemetery, Union County.
Jeremiah remembers Thomas and Nancy in his will, as follows:

"I give to my friend, William Steen, my Negro girl, named Martha, together with her future increase and issue, and one hundred acres of land of the tract whereon I now live to be laid off so as to include my residence and outbuildings, beginning at the corner just above Neel's Creek Meeting House, thence along Solomon Gregory's Line until it comes to the Meeting House Spring Branch, thence down the branch to Harrison Gregory's corner, thence along the line between Harrison Gregory's land and mine to some point north of my residence and outbuildings, in trust, nevertheless, for the use and benefit and behoof of my daughter, Nancy Steen, wife of Thomas Steen, for and during her natural life, and, at her death, to go to such children as she may leave surviving her, the child or children of a deceased parent to take the share to which the parent would have been entitled if living".

Jeremiah Gregory wrote his Will on 10 February 1860. He died 18 January 1868 and his Will was admitted to Probate 20 January 1868.

NOTE: Some of the following information was submitted in 1996 by Jacob Foster 'Jake' Gregory of Delray Beach, FL, with additional information supplied by T. Hopkins Peake.

Andrew Ferdinand (Verdy) Gregory (15 September 1831-21 May 1905) born in Union, S.C. was the fifth child of Jeremiah and Naomi Steen Gregory. His wife was Charlotte Jolly (22 September 1831-29 August 1899), born in Union County, SC. She was the daughter of Shadrack P. and Cynthia Gregory Jolly. Cynthia Gregory Jolly was the daughter of John Gregory, son of Jeremiah and Lettice Young Gregory, and unknown wife. Both Verdy and Charlotte are buried at Hebron Baptist Church. Their children: Richard Gilliam; Robert G.; Margaret (1855). A child, Mary Ann Savage (age 5), lived with the family, in 1860, but was gone in 1870.

Note: For additional information about Charlotte Jolly, wife of Andrew Ferdinand Gregory, refer to Chapter 7 - Jeremiah

Note: Additional information and corrections to the existing data was provided by Catherine E. Gregory.

Richard Gilliam Gregory (1 January 1854-20 January 1926), the first child of Verdy and Charlotte Gregory, was born in Union County, S.C. He married Sarah Ellen Betenbaugh (16 May 1859-20 February 1934, Union Co., SC), the daughter of John J. Betenbaugh (1834 - 24 March 865) and Adalaide Humphries (10 November 1841 - 16 May 1900), both of Union County, South Carolina. Sarah Ellen was only two years old when, on 5 December 1861, her father enlisted at Union, South Carolina, for the duration of the Civil War. John J. Betenbaugh was assigned to Company F, 15th South Carolina Infantry. On 2 July 1863, he left camp on detached service to wait on wounded at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The Roll of Prisoners of War states that John was captured at Gettysburg on July 5. While a prisoner at Baltimore, before moving on to Prisoner of War Camp Hoffman, at Point Lookout, Maryland, John was hospitalized. A year later, John appears on a Register of Jackson Hospital, Richmond, Virginia, dated 24 June 1864, for ascites and chronic ulcer of right leg - duration 12 months. By that time, over 20,000 Confederate prisoners were crowded into Point Lookout's Camp Hoffman. During the prison operation, filth prevailed, wells became contaminated, men literally froze to death in tents with but one blanket and very little wood, and a total of 3,384 prisoners died at the camp. After 20 months as a prisoner of war, John died at the camp from scurvy and was buried the same day in grave 1349 of the War Grave Yard. This prisoner-of-war area is now Point Lookout State Park, and exhibits a memorial to those who died at the camp. A plaque includes the name, 'John Betenbaugh'. Tillman Gregory (ca. 1797-?) was the eighth son of John and Margaret Gregory, based on the list of his sons in John's will recorded on 5 April 1819. In February 1819, John Gregory granted to Tillman, 100 acres of land "one half of 200 acres whereon the said John Gregory now lives." This was part of a tract of land granted to Isaac Gregory, Sr. by William Bull, Governor of South Carolina, dated 20 June 1768 and located on a south branch of Brown's creek.

Based on the information currently known (1999), Tillman Gregory married Lydia ca. 1828-1829. His first wife apparently died at child birth when their daughter Mary J. was born ca. 1830. Tillman and Lydia had four children: Margaret; Addison; Wesley; Mary J.

It appears that Tillman along the family of Captain Matthew Patton and his wife, Nancy Bobo, daughter of Sampson and Sarah Simpson Bobo, and other family members moved from SC ca. 1829 to Carroll Co., TN arriving there ca. 1831. Nancy Bobo Patton had been married 3 times, lastly to Capt. Patton ca. 1802. In the 1850 census of Carroll Co., TN, Tillman is listed with his second wife, Sarah W, whom he married ca. 1833 in TN, and their family along with some Dudley children. Why were these Dudley children in Tillman's household unless they were relative's of his second wife or of Nancy Patton.

Two doors down is listed Sarah Patton, widow of William L. Patton, son of Capt. Patton. Sarah Patton prior to her marriage was Sarah Ann Isabella Means. When Capt. Patton died in 1837, his son, William L. was adm. of his estate and his bond was signed by Tillman Gregory and Joseph T. Dudley. Willam L. Patton and his wife's daughter, Rachel F., married James H. Dudley (of Tillman Gregory's home). Apparently Tillman's first wife may have been part of Nancy Bobo's family by her previous marriages but this is pure speculation until proven otherwise. She is living with Tillman in 1850 census. Tillman's family as listed in the 1850 census of Carroll Co., TN:
