QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

From: William Gregory
Subject: Searching for Marriage record....

Hello... I am hoping someone in our family of Gregory's might be able to help me clear up these questions....
Mary Susan Josey (born Oct 15, 1831, in Sumter, SC area, died, and buried April 20, 1885, in Chester County, SC). She is said to have married William Tillman Gregory (born 1830 in Union County, SC, son of Edward M. Gregory and died possibly 1888, place of death and burial at this time unknown...)
Mary Susan Josey was daughter of William Willis Jossey of Sumter, SC area 1796-1866 and Sarah Boykin (born July 27, 1803 in Kershaw., SC and died June 16, 1886 In Lee, South Carolina... Sarah Boykin's parents were Drury, Sr and Sarah Boykin...

Can any fellow researchers help me firmly establish that Mary Susan Josey was married to William Tillman Gregory of Union County, SC in 1850? I know William Tillman’s wife name was indeed Susan, and also all their children, but need proof of their marriage...and I know Susan Gregory's burial place.... Is there proof of their marriage, in record or implied?

Does anyone have proof of where/when William Tillman Gregory died and is buried.

Thanks for any assistance that anyone would take time to give.

William Gregory, descendant of John Gregory, son of Isaac the Elder.

My name is Ken Aker Son of Shirly Austin Harts, I have a question concerning Scottish ancestry. Who do we have lineage with in Scotland I only ask this because on the site you have the crest of clan Macgregor and Clan Gregory. I ask this as I have friends in the Saint Andrews society of Baltimore and I would like to join, but I have to show a connection to Scotland. Is there one other than the name please help.

Subject: re: Sarah Gregory, daughter of John and Margaret

Hello,
I have been aware of this site for quite some time, but never thought I was connected to any of the Gregorys here. Recently I have changed my mind and have a question to put to those few who have not been able to connect their mid 1800s Gregorys with their 1700s ancestors. My ggggrandmother, Jane, was a Gregory b. ca 1817 in SC, and married John L. Stalnaker b. ca 1815 also of SC. They married in 1843, Macon Co AL. Jane may have had a sister, Catherine (Kitty), who also married a Stalnaker (Adam) in AL. Jane and John had 9 children that we know of; James, John H., Jesse Crawford, William Richard, Tempe, Sarah/Sallie, Payton, Matilda (my direct line) and Willie. I have come to suspect that Sarah/Sallie, daughter of John and Margaret Lipham Gregory may have been my Jane's mother and as much as I would like to find her, I am not please with where it leaves me ...answers but not answers.

My question to all of those other Gregorys out there who haven't been able to connect their ancestor beyond this time frame, who is your ancestor? Maybe if we all come together on this, we can figure out the answers we need. We know that Sarah/Sallie married another Gregory, who, I believe it has been said, stayed in Union Co. and they had a son, Thomas. I don't know if this was Sarah/Sallie's eldest son, although I suspect he may have been since she ask that land from her father's estate be transferred to him. If, in fact he was the eldest son he may have been named after his grandfather and possibly his father. I have found a Thomas in Union Co. 1820 census that has children and a wife the right age. I also found a Patrey, (probably Payton) Gregory who may have some connection. We have often wondered where the name Payton came from. I am just throwing some suspicions out their for discussion and I hope to have peaked some interest from others. I know there are more out there that are as desperate for answers as I. Where are the descendents of Thomas? We need you! I hope this generates some discussion and possibly some answers.

Thank you

Subject: re: Gregory family connection

Hello,
My cousin and I discovered our Gregory family line over a year ago and have unsuccessfully research all of the clues we have, which consists of the names of our Gregory's children. I am hoping for a smidgeon of help from your line of Gregorys because I suspect a connection.
Our ggggrandmother was Jane Gregory. Born in SC in 1817, according to her headstone, located in Valley Mills Cemetery, Bosque Co Tx. As I have read the history of Isaac the Elder and down, I suspect John and Margaret Lipham Gregory as her grandparents through Sarah/Sallie Gregory who married an unknown Gregory. My greatest hope is that I may find some help in piecing together Sarah Gregory's spouse and family. Jane having been born in SC may have gone through Ga during her youth, we are not certain, but we do know she ended up in Alabama and married John L. Stalnaker, also of SC, probably Edgefield Co, ca. 1820. John and Jane married in 1843 in Macon Co Al.and made their home in what was Coosa Co and became Elmore Co. Our most promising clue has been the names of their children which were, James, John H., Crawford, Jesse, Tempe, William Richard, Payton, Sallie, Matilda and Willis. There may have been an Emma, as well. John H. was killed at the Battle of Shiloh and John L. must have died between 1863 and 1870, as Jane is shown as head of household in the 1870 census. We are not clear on how many sons were lost during the war, but do know that Jane took Sallie, Matilda (our direct line), Willis and Payton to Washington Co. Tx by 1877. We often wondered why Jane, having still young children would take of alone to Tx, but have decided she was moving with or to relatives.
When Jane died in 1898, six months after the death of Payton, she must have been living in Bosque, McLennan or Coryell Co with some family members. It has been impossible for us to determine whose hh because there are no surviving census records for 1890.
In reading the history of the Gregorys, so many of the names are the same as those we have been working with all this time. It seems very possible that my Jane's mother could have been your Sarah/Sallie Gregory and her father would have been one of those male names excluding James. We firmly believe Jane's husband to have named his first born son, James, after his own father.

If there is anyone who has any information or advice, we certainly would welcome it and hope that we can find a willing assistant in your midst.
Thank you so much for your time, wonderful website, and any assistance.

From: Rose M Newton

Looking for desc. of Hazel Gregory b. c 1915 to Flossie Donzella Fleming of Ringold, GA. daughter of Frances Jane Sheldon. Last news of her I've seen is: Livingston Alden FLEMING was a United Brethrean minister. The family lived next door to his son Willie in Woods County, Oklahoma for a while. By 1930, Livingston, Frances, and their granddaughter Hazel GREGORY (born circa 1915 in Iowa) were residing in Newton Township of Carroll County, Iowa. After Mr. Gregory, her mother married John Baldozier.

Hoping some of Hazel's family will be looking for their lineage. I have run across Hazel's name while entering her mother Flossie Fleming descendants in the Sheldon Family Association data base. They are descended from Progenitor John Sheldon of South Kigstown, RI. When writing use the Sheldon number and I can go right to Hazel.

Subject: Union County Gregorys-other Gregorys

Have any of the Union County Gregorys had their DNA typed? I believe I am a descendent of the 'other' Gregory group (John and sons Richard, John and Ben) who moved on Crim's Creek off the Broad river around 1746. Research on this family and relatives in Berk County, Pennsylvania plus definite DNA matches reveal that this family were most likely 'Gnaegis' who migrated from the Bern, Switzerland area. This family carries a rare DNA haplotype (E1b1b1a3 or V-22) believed to be brought into Europe with the Romans. Old John Gregory's name is spelled as Gregy in one publication.
This is my haplotype and my question is : Do the Union County Gregorys have this DNA haplotype? If so, the two Gregory families that setteled so close and bear similar names are related and part of the larger Gnaegi group of Swiss-Germans.
Thank you for a reply.

I have been trying to find information on my husband's family. His grandmother was Carra Mae Gregory married to David Lyle. Her father was Allen Leeory Gregory born in Georgia 1893 her mother Maggie. His father was John L. Gregory born 1867 in Fannin Georgia. His father was James A Gregory born 1836 and I believe Reuben Gregory was his father. I am trying to gather information about anyone on this family. Stories, pictures and anything beyond Reuben Gregory. Carra Mae's parents divorced after a rough marriage and I believe Carra and her mother may have gone back to South Carolina for awhile. Allen remarried 2 more times to Maude M. and Beckie Mae Hodges.

Subject: GREGORY

Hello
I saw your Gregory website and have a question. My g grandmother is Mary Lydia? Gregory b 1873 in Grundy CO. TN. Her father is said to have been Samuel Gregory born 1857 Bledsoe Co. TN. On the 1880 Grundy Co census it shows a Samuel Gregory (19) living with a Martin and Francis E. Shetter and a Mary 3 yrs old listed as a granddaughter. No mention of a mother. If this is indeed Samuels’s daughter he was 15/16 when she was born. In later years Mary had children Ralph, Susie Mae and Nora 1903 (my grandmother), twin Ora died at birth by a John Sweeton. Mary and John died young and her children went to live with a Mollie E. McGarr in Bledsoe Co. TN. I’m at a total dead end with everyone dying young. All of this is word of mouth and I'm assuming Samuel went on to marry but I can’t find a thing on his first child by unknown mother.

If any of this is in the Gregory line any help is appreciated.
Thank you

I'm searching for my father Charles Warren Gregory. His last known address circa 1965 was 1200 Clements Bridge Rd. Camden,N.J. He had re-married to a lady whose relatives were located in Philadelphia, PA and had a daughter as of 1965. My Mother was Elizabeth Maxine Sullinger. I was born in Memphis, TN. Parentally abducted, name changed several times, and re-located to several different states.
All communication sent to me by him was destroyed except for one letter brought to me by a friend of my Mother who knew of my plight, and sneaked the letter out to me. Disowned for my search, I'm still searching at this time. Any and all help will be GREATLY appreciated.

Subject: Query regarding Gregory Family Tree (AL via SC)

I seem to have hit a brick wall tracing my family back to their S.C. roots. We are from the Steiner's Store Community in Butler Co., AL where the Gregory's have always done real well for themselves. My understanding is that we are originally from Saluda S.C. and have relatives there.

My GG Grandfather was Johnathan Gregory (b. May 26, 1831 died November 7, 1893). He also appears in the 1860 Fed Census as J.S. Gregory and the 1880 as John S. Gregory with below family:

John S. Gregory - Age 50
Martha J. Gregory - Age 39
William M. A. Gregory - Age 15
Johnathan N. O. Gregory - Age 12
Mary L. Gregory - Age 10
Luellan E. B. Gregory - Age 8
Emaline J. Gregory - Age 4
Gregory - Age 6M

I do not know what his middle initial 'S' stands for, but would be very interested to know... His son Llewellyn Eldridge is my great grandfather and I am told that he had another son 'Lonnie' (not sure which of the above that would be) who migrated back to Saluda, S.C. and became a lawyer. There used to be a cousin that my grandfather (Tom) and great uncle (William E.) corresponded with although I can't recall her name.

Can anyone offer assistance to the linage of my Johnathan or John S. Gregory?

Thanks & Kind Regards,
Jason

I am wondering if anything at all is known about him beyond what is on the site. Specifically, his birth date, and who he married. I would very much appreciate information anyone can provide about Narcissa Gregory. I know nothing of her origin. All I have is this: On Sept. 22, 1827 She married Jacob Edgerton who was born in Pawlet, Vermont in 1800. Apparently their two children were born in Pawlet. However, Jacob and Narcissa later lived in Rutland, Vermont where Narcissa died on Aug. 10, 1886. My parents long felt that perhaps Narcissa was adopted. I, myself, wonder if perhaps she was a widow when she married Jacob Edgerton.

I have been working about five years trying to compile a genealogy of my family, but thus far have not found any records of anyone before my grandfather. I was greatly pleased to find your web site. I must say, great job.

I have been searching the names list, and do not see any names I can connect with my family. If there is any connection, it probably branches much further back, I presume. Or perhaps the nearest connection lies somewhere in Europe.

Nonetheless, I would like to make contact and explore further, to see if we can identify any possible connections. I can best be reached via email as per below.

I do not know my mother's maiden name. Her first name was Vivian. My maternal grandmother was Irene O'Donnell. She and her husband, George O'Donnell raised us.
I realize that my father is dead by now. He was a good dad, though. I would like to know more about his life. He was a young man when I last saw him, so I am sure there are half-brothers and/or half-sisters.
I would like to get any touch with any member of my family.

Possible names for his parents are, James Gregory and either Isabella Templeman or Jane Hughart. Alex married my GG Grandmother, Mary Jane McAllister, possibly in 1854, in Franklin County, Mo. where we believe her parents were. They moved to Hickory County, Mo. sometime between 1854 and 1883, when he died at Cross Timbers, Hickory Co. Mo.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Gideon Gregory

I am the g-g-g-grandson of Gideon Gregory. He first shows up in the 1850 Greene County TN census with his wife "Anna B.". At this time the only information I have is from an eccentric 80 year old cousin who states that he remembers stories about Gideon and Anna not actually being married. They allegedly came together in North Carolina (sorry, don't know what county) in 1820. Eccentric cousin also states that he remembers that Anna was full blooded Cherokee. this could be one reason I haven't been able to find any marriage documemtation. The closest thing I have come up with to date is the Barren County Kentucky marriage bond for his son, Joseph Henderson Gregory and Agnes Denton, listing them both as "of color". I am told that was common for part indian applicants at the time. I have beat my brains out trying to find any more information on this. If anyone out there has any more info, give me a holler!

I am looking for my 4th great grandfather, James S. Gregory. From an old family bible which is no longer available a family member trascribed this information: James S. Gregory and wife Mary McDonough had son Ivey Williams Gregory born 21 Dec 1808 at Onlsow Co., N.C. he married Lucinda Turner who was born 8 Jan 1813 from Burke Co., GA They are both burried in Stewart Co., GA.
From 'A Gregory Colonial Family' by Ben T. Gregory, MD it states that William E. Gregory's children were James S., Washington, Macy, and Benjamin Gregory. There are no dates associated with this or location. Would anyone know more about the family of William E. Gregory? And in particular his son James S. Gregory?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Subject: Willis, William, and Ashton Gregory
Date: Sun, 2 Oct 2005

I have Celia Gregory alleged to have been the wife of William Thomas, having a number of children including my ancestor, Lewis Ashton Thomas [or Lewis Ashton Minor Thomas, depending on the source of the information]. In a Jones County NC law suit, Vann v. Hargett, 1831, the children of Mary Ann Gregory [daughter of Joseph Gilbert, of Jones County, d. 1784], and her husband John Gregory were listed as follows: Levicy Gregory[m. William Armstrong], Penelope Gregory [m. John Vann], Willis Gregory, Ashton Gregory, Elizabeth [married Samuel Smith], Polly[died without issue], William, Lewis, Allen[died without issue] and Joseph [died without issue].

Willis, Aston, Eliza, Polly, William, Lewis, Allen and Joseph were all born after 1784. The excerpt on line of this action indicated that as of the time of the action, 1831, William and Ashton were both living in South Carolina. This appears to be a mistranslation because later the excerpt indicates that William Gregory was in Alabama. I suspect that it should have said that 'Willis and Ashton were living in South Carolina.'

It seems likely that Willis, son of John Gregory and Mary Ann Gilbert, was the same Willis that Jack Gregory mentioned as his ancestor in his 1999 Union address. Does anyone know?

There is no mention in the excerpt of a Celia Gregory among the children of this couple, yet the heir of Celia Gregory [m. a Smith] were mentioned as entitled to a part of the property in question. Does anyone know whether Celia Gregory was part of this family, and if so, whether she might have been married to a Thomas at some point?

My ancestor William Thomas was said to be from Duplin County, which is very near Jones County where John and Mary Ann's children were born. Given that one of William Thomas's and Celia Gregory's children was named 'Lewis Ashton Thomas', this might suggest that he had been named for two of Celia's brothers.

Any one out there with any info of this or any other Celia Gregory born near Duplin County, NC sometime close to 1780? Thanks,

Kay

Any information you can provide would be so wonderful, I just discovered this site this morning after speaking with my Uncle about his memories of his mother, and uncles from South Carolina. Well here goes...the info I have is my grandmother Annie Gregory born approx 1898... her mother was Laura Gregory and her father was either James or Arthur Gregory ***yes they were both Gregory's who were married and widowed ...Annie is the only child between them...I am told there were a total of thirteen half brothers and sisters, the children of laura and james/arthur..... one of Annie's brothers was named Jack..he owned a grocery store and a railroad yard, never married, no children...another brother was Fred...possibly had a daughter Doris...and several other children. The story is my grandmother Annie met George Christofileas during or shortly after the first world war...they were married in 1919 and moved tp New York City, had four children Rose, James,Alex, and John. We have some pictures of James (my father) as a toddler on a farm, Uncle Jack on his farm perhaps.
Well I hope to hear from someone, when I told my father about this he was so HAPPY!! Looking forward to any info.

The only match is the Patsey Gregory that is listed with the Edward & Nancy Gregory family in the 1850 Union Co., SC census. The following are listed:
Edward Gregory Sr. 66
Nancy 65
Margaret 28
Solomon 24
Jerard 22
Andrew 7
Patsey 3

I saw your listing on gregoryfamily.com the children for Edward and Nancy. Patsey was not listed. Do you know anything about this Patsey Gregory?
One clue is in the 1900 Union Co., SC census. Solomon Gregory (son of Edward & Nancy) is listed with the youngest son of Andrew J. Mitchell and Patsey Gregory, David and his wife. David is listed as 'nephew' to Solomon Gregory. The Mitchell family Bible lists Patsey as Martha M. Gregory.

I noticed that you have Frances' parents as Miles and Mary Ferguson. My gggrandfather was Samuel Ferguson (1811-1889,SC). His first wife was Lucinda McCrary, daughter of George Brandon McCrary and Frances 'Frankey' Ferguson.

Samuel and Lucinda had a daughter Frances Parmelia, b.1839, who I have as being married to Warren Simpson Gregory. This is through family recollections and other genealogical sites. My lineage is through Samuel and Lucinda's son Christopher Columbus Ferguson (b.1837), Charles Madison Ferguson (b.1866), and Beulah Wade Ferguson (b.1901) - my mother.

I have several Miles Fergusons in the family, but the one mentioned, married to Mary (actually Mary Beasley), was born in 1768, and died in 1830.

Could you let me know the basis for your information - maybe we can clear up a misunderstanding.

Lucinda McCrary Ferguson died in childbirth in 1848 and Samuel then married Agnes Philson - daughter of William and Agnes Parker Philson - born in PA.

It appears like my James S. Gregory was born abt 1790 SC. This is going by census records for Fayette Co., AL 1830, 1840, 1850.
He was listed on the 1850 Fayette Co AL census with wife Martha b 1810 SC and children Elmira, Cicero, Mary, Margaret, John, Martha and possibly a Joseph that was listed on the 1840 Fayette Co AL census along with James S. Gregory.
Their daughter Elmira name was Amanda Elmira b 1829 Merengo Co., AL She married James Allen Bannister b 1825 SC in Fayette Co., AL or Marion Co., AL There were older children not listed on the 1850 census. Believe one to be Ellender (Nelly) Gregory married to Isaac P. Allred in Fayette Co., AL.

I was hoping that somewhere in your Gregory family research you may have ran across him.
I have noticed that there was a James S. Gregory that was the son of William E. Gregory possible son of John Gregory. Could this James S. Gregory be my James S. Gregory b 1790 SC?

They moved to Berkely Co. when James was a small boy. Isabella was the daughter of Jonas Carper and Christina (Buroff) Carper. Her Grandfather Jacob and GGrandfather Phillip Carper were also born and raised in Berkely, Co.VA. James and Isabella were m.12 Nov. 1842. The banns were posted Nov. 9, 1842. They moved their family of eight along with James' mother, Sarah, west in 1857. They went to Keokuk, Lee Co.,IA and then to Kahoka, Clark Co.,Mo. My GGrandmother was the twelfth child of this family. Her name was Mary Caroline "Mamie" Gregory (b. 23 May 1863 Clark Co.MO.) She m. James David Dunn (15,Aug. 1880 in Clark Co.MO.) I need the names of James' father and grandparents. The names James, Richard, Benjamin, Thomas, William and John are so prevalent. The first Gregory to settle in Northeastern MO. was an Abel Gregory. He was the founder of "Gregory's Point" later called "Gregory's Landing". According to the dates I have, he could either be an Uncle, cousin, or brother of my James. This is a work in progress.

I am not sure who her parents were. I think her mother's name was Texanna Gregory, born 1855 died 1939. there are several other Gregory family members in the Val Verde cemetery. I am not sure how they are related, but they are all from the same line. The names are:
Roxie Gregory 1892
Virtie M Gregory 1887
WH Gregory 1859-1938
William F Gregory 1882-1953
Hugh Gregory 1892-1952

Does anybody have any information on these Gregory's from Texas. I really have no idea where they came from, but they should have lived around Milam, and Bell County, Texas around 1850. Any suggestions or information will be appreciated.

I was born on June 27th 1960 in San Bernardino, California to Gerald Eugene Gregory and my mother Delores Arelene Gregory (maiden name Tayler). My father Gerald was born August 7th 1928 and died July 14th 1981 in Ely, Nevada. He is buried in a cemetary in Westminster Memorial Park, Westminster, Ca.
I also have a half brother Michael Lee Gregory, born November 17th or 18th 1949, whereabouts unknown. He has three children that I know of, Merilyn, Matthew and Meredeth.
Gerald's father was Phillip Allen Gregory Jr. (deceased in the early 70's), married to Isma Fay (died in 1959). Gerald's siblings were Lorna Estella Gregory, Elmer Allen Gregory and Earl Daniel Gregory, all deceased (death dates are unknown at this time).
Lorna was married to Robert Nord and resided in Minnesota at her time of death in Rochester. She had at least 2 children, Rollinda and Robert Jr.
Elmer died in the mid 90's in San Bernardino, California. He had 4 children and 2 stepchildren: Debra Marie, Dorothy, Carroll Allen, and Donald Allen. Carroll Allen died in July of 1999. He had no children. The remaining children are living.
Earl died in the 80's and had 3 or 4 children. One of the girls names was Gail. I, Sandra have twins, a boy Justin William Morain and a girl Corey Michele Morain. Also my great grandmother's name was Effie Gregory. She died in the early 80's. She was 104. I believe she was a resident of Lomita, Ca., burial place unknown.

Hello. I am writing from Birmingham UK and wonder if anyone can help me with details of my cousin's paternal family. His name is Richard (Rick) Gregory, b1955 Providence, Rhode Island.

Rick's grandfather was Howarth Lynn Gregory, b 16th September 1885 possibly at Hobbs Lane, Edgeworth, Lancashire UK. He died May 1969 Providence RI. On 12th January 1918, he married Maud Lotty Cramp in North Providence RI. She was born 7th October 1887 Coalville, Leicestershire UK. She died 24th December 1918 at which time she was living at 17 Bloomingdale Ave, Pawtucket RI. They had a son - Howarth Lynn Jnr - father of Rick. When Maud died, Howarth Snr brought Howarth Jnr back to England where he lived with Maud's parents for five years and until Howarth Snr re-married and sent for him to return to the US. Snr returned from this trip on the Carmania to Ellis Island from Liverpool on 8th November 1919. At that time, he was living at 16 Tenth St, Providence RI.

Howarth Lynn Snr's father was John Gregory b1849 Cheshire UK. He was a bleacher of fabrics. John married Hannah Thomasina White b abt 1848 Manchester UK and she died aged about 83. They had five children living with them at Hob Lane Brk House, Edgeworth, Lancashire UK, in 1881:
Harry b1873; Mary Janet b1875; Charles b1876; Frank b1878; Ethel Kate b1881. The first 4 were born Entwistle, Lancashire UK and Ethel Kate was born in Edgeworth, Lancashire.

John and Hannah had 21 children altogether including possibly two sets of twins. The names of four of the others were Jack, May, Jenny and, of course, Howarth Lynn. I cannot find when John and Hannah emigrated to the US and we think there's a possibility that John was refused entry due to ill health and that Hannah stayed there alone with the children.

If there's anyone who can give me any information at all, I shall be more than grateful.

Please e-mail me at janemclean01@aol.com. Look forward to hearing from you.

I hope someone might be able to help me identify this John Gregory, who his wife was and who his parents were. Thank you.

Subject: Alfred Gregory of PA

Here's what I have on my Gregorys, all of whom, to my knowledge, are of Pennsylvania origin.

Alfred Gregory
Charles Gregory (b: 10 Aug 1798; d: 14 Mar 1873) m. Frances Otterman
George Washington Gregory (b: 9 Jul 1824; d: 11 Aug 1899) m. Tabitha Dennis Ewing
Edgar Sanford Gregory (b: 1 Mar 1869; 20 July 1937) m./2 Bertha Mabel Thompson
Martha Emily Gregory (b: 28 Oct 1919; d: 11 Dec 1999) m. Ernest Francis Johns

Charles, George and Edgar are buried in the Freeport Memorial Cemetery in Freeport, Armstrong County, PA. It is reported that my grandmother, Bertha Mabel Thompson. traveled to Chester County in order to marry Edgar Sanford Gregory. Perhaps, that is the route this family took to arrive in Armstrong County.

Although I own the bible of Alfred Gregory, it does not provide any clues to his origin, marriage, etc.

According to family lore, this Gregory line is Scot or English.

If anyone has any knowledge of this family, I would certainly appreciate correspondence. Thank you very much.

Hi,

I have ancestors in Cades Cove. I have an old picture of a group of some of the folks in Cades Cove probably taken around 1920. On the back is a list of names, but there are fewer names than there are people in the picture. I was wondering if you might be able to identify any of the people. I know which ones are Sarah, Almine, Flausey and Fannie, and the old gentlemen I am assuming is Jim Cable, but haven't a clue about the rest of the people. Do you know any of these folks?

Mary Cable
Reba Cable
Jim Cable
Sarah Wilcox
Almine (Elmina)
Flausey (Flossie)
Fannie Wilcox
In parenthesis is the spelling of Almine's and Flausey's names on their grave markers. Sarah, Almine, Flausey and Fannie are all buried in the Cable Cemetery in the cove. Click here to see picture. In the front row left to right is Almine, then Flausey and Fannie OR Fannie and Flausey? Twins and I don't know which is which and Sarah Margaret Gregg Wilcox.

I am a descendant of Sarah (Gregg) Wilcox. Her daughter Elizabeth is my grandmother. She married John Quiet, son of Henry Clay Quiett who also lived in the cove for a short while around 1900. Would be interested in any information you might have on the Quiet/Quite/Quiett family as well.

Does anyone have Gregory connections in Johnson County NE; Lyon County KS, or Prower County CO? Earlier family might have been in DeKalb IL. I am searching for a Cozier Gregory and a Roy Gregory. I think Cozier's wife's name was Meari. There is possibly a first and second generation of Cozier Gregory's. I believe they may have participated in Rodeo competitions. I have pictures of Cozier II doing fancy rope demonstration. The time period would have been mid 1800'a for generation 1 and late 1800's for no. 2. There is a picture of possibly Cozier 1 with horse doing a trick. Both Roy and Cozier 2 are pictured several times on horseback and with the "shaggy" chaps. I believe the senior Coziers ranched near Granada, CO. I believe there may be a connection to Tibbets and Williams families or the Rowe and King families. They may have lived for a time near Vesta or Tecumseh NE and/or Allen KS. I found a marriage for a Cozier Tibbets m. Mariah Tibbets, 1865, DeKalb County IL. I would really love to make a connection to one of these families. I have numerous pictures I would be glad to scan and share with any family members. One other possibility is that there might be a Canada connection for these Gregory's as there is a post card posted from Canada from one of them.

Three years later Miss Wessinger conveyed most of her land to Frank Gregory, luckily the deed was not recorded, or rerecorded until 1877 so its details survived the loss of the records in the Civil War.

I descend through another early Daviess County Gregory. John Gregory, my 3rd Great Grandfather was born 1814 in Indiana. He married Nancy Stafford in Daviess County, IN in April 21 1836.
John and Nancy had the following children:
Mary 1837
Rachel 1838
William 1842
Ganzada 1844
John Talbert 1846
Jeremiah 1847
Prisilla 1848
Isaac 1851
Martha 1852
Elizabeth 1859

As John was born in 1814 in Indiana could he have been a son of Jeremiah? In the 1870 census John notes that his father was born in South Carolina. I know there was a Jeremiah in Daviess County in 1820 as noted in the following excerpt from

In September 24, 1833 Probate Court Records of Daviess county, Indiana Letters of administration were given to John (McCafferty) in re of the estate of Nathan Kirkland deceased. Jeremy Gregory gave bond of $1200 security. Heirs, Sara Kirkland and Samual Kirkland, minor. John McCafferty was appointed guardian of Samuel.

I also have a website with specifics of this family at http://www.souldesire.com

Hello! I thoroughly enjoyed the Gregory Family web site. Hats off to all those involved in the research and reproduction of the information. Unfortunately, I did not find my Gregory connections.

My family lore starts with four Gregory brothers -- Samuel, Joseph, William and James -- who were of Scottish origin and arrived in America in 1682 from England aboard the ship "Welcome". These four brothers initially went to Penn's colony as they were interested in his ideas. However, one of the brothers left for New Amsterdam, one left for Westmoreland County, VA, and two stayed with William Penn.

My ggggg-grandfather, Joseph, was of the Virginia branch of the Gregory's. He is supposedly the youngest brother of Roger Gregory who was the husband of Mildred Washington. (Yes, my family has the same story about being related to George Washington's family). Joseph was killed by Indians leaving his son Samuel an orphan. I know nothing of Joseph's wife. Samuel was raised by neighbors in Westmoreland County, VA.

Samuel was probably 19 when he served in the Virginia Militia. He was born circa 1757-1760 and died October 8, 1842. He married a neighbor girl, Sarah Davis, in 1787 and moved with her to Boone County, KY. Their first son James Gregory was born in 1788. In 1795, Samuel and family migrated to Ohio and became one of the earliest pioneers in Butler County. Today a creek near his land still bears the name Gregory Creek. There were four sons and five daughters from this marriage. Two of these daughters migrated into Fountain County, Indiana in 1826. Sarah Esther Gregory was married to William McClure. Eventually, Samuel's family all migrated to Indiana except for two sons and one daughter that died in Ohio.

If anyone has any information about Joseph and/or Samuel, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Many thanks.

I looked at this site briefly, and could not find this Gregory. I am seeking information on a Robert Gregory who died 1716 in Virginia: Richmond County, VA records 07 Feb 1716/17 - "Gregory's estate to be appraised John Jones, Thomas Deekers, John Menifee and John Glendening or any three of them."

Rebecca Waters and Rowland Thornton gave Bond for Rebecca Waters to be admrx. of Robert Gregory 07 Feb 1716/17. Later, Rowland Thornton-guardian Mar 1818 of John Jones children, John, James and Mary.

I am researching Waters and Menifee/Menefee, and am interested in the possible connection, where they lived, etc. I would greatly appreciate any information on Robert Gregory, Rebecca Waters, and John Menifee.
Thank you.

Help.....I have been unable to find very much on my grandmother, Barbara Ann Gregory....Here is what I know: She married Wm H Metcalf, Nov. 23, 1863, in Chariton Co MO. She probably passed away in 1892, as she is in the probate records, in Ch. Co. Mo. She had 11 children, a son James F. Metcalf, my father was born in 1880.
He was 57 when I was born, and I did not find out much about his family, as he passed away in 1959. I am hoping that perhaps someone out there has heard of a Barbara Ann Gregory.

My grandfather was James Garland Gregory born December 14, 1907 at Atkins, Pope County, Arkansas. He was the son of James Franklin Gregory born about 1869 and Nancy Jane Overturf born about 1870/75. I don't know where James Franklin Gregory originated from and have hit the genealogical brick wall. I have found several James Franklins but so far none of them are THE James Franklin for me. My grandfather had a brother and 2 sisters but I do not have names for them. If it is any help, My grandfather married in Atkins, Arkansas on September 6, 1929 to Effie May Cross, daughter of Will Cross and Martha Bone. My grandmother was also born in Atkins, Arkansas. If anyone has ANY information of this line of Gregorys that was in the Pope or Newton Counties Arkansas area around 1880s to early 1900s, I would really appreciate any information available.

I answered a query from a distant relative in California who was looking for Edward Pinkney Gregory whose list of children included my husband's grandfather James William Gregory as well other names we recognized. We have been to cemeteries where both are buried.

My husband's father was also named Edward Pinkney after his grandfather. The relative in California sent information showing the first E.P being born in Guilford, Vermont in 1827. There is a great documentation in the CA information. The genealogy is this:

  1. Daniel MacGregor (Scotland)
  2. Isaac Gregory,Sr.(he changed the name)
  3. Isaac Jr.(Deacon)Gregory
  4. Captain Stephen Gregory
  5. Edward Pinkney Gregory
  6. James William Gregory
  7. Edward Pinkney Gregory(2)
  8. James William Gregory(2), my husband.
However, our niece has found information showing Edward Pinkney Gregory on the census listing birth in Union County, South Carolina in January 20, 1827. He is also shown to have served the Confederates. He migrated through GA, AL, TX. One child John was born in GA. Most were born in AL. and the last two born in TX. The list of children that E.P. and Edna Martin (b. November 13, 1833 in GA) had were:
John b.1853; Dialtha b.1855; Loving b. 1857: William M b.1859; Asa b. 1860; Matallis Antippie (I remember her. She was called "Aunt Pink"); Fannie b. November 5, 1865; Hairm(also Hiram) Harrison b.1868; Charles b. 1870; Hudie b. 1872; James William b. 1874; Hattie b. 1878.

These are the same children the Vermont Edward Pinkney is shown to have. I wonder if both names Edward Pinkney refer to the same person or different persons. Could Edward Pinkney have migrated from Vermont to South Carolina and given false information to the census because of the enmity between North and South? It would have been politically correct. It would also been safer for him and his family to be "Southern."

Any help will greatly appreciated.

I noticed the posting from:tim; signed at the closing by Beverly (Himes) Barger, which requested any information about, Harrison, George or William Andrew McL. Gregory. I think I can supply some info about William Andrew McL. Gregory. The citation said that he was born about 1888 and died about 1953 at Woodruff. The Spartanburg County Library has done a death index for all deaths mentioned in the Spartanburg Herald Journal for Spartanburg, Union and Cherokee Counties. It covers the past 50 years. I checked the 1953 Index for Gregorys and found one for William A. Gregory, age 65, h/o Dorcas Reynolds, who dies 4/27/53 at Enoree. (Enoree is near Woodruff). You can research this index by going to : infodepot/org. This gives the Spbg Cnty Library homepage. Click on genealogy, which takes you to the Kennedy Room/Local History. He met Elizabeth Lee at the Church of the Resurrection on Broad Street, they married and had my father John Charles Gregory. Daddy graduated from U of PA in 1927 and married my mother, Emilie Rebecca Craven in 1929.

My brother Jack is a nationally known artist now living near Boston. His daughter, Elizabeth Lee Gregory, (PhD, Yale, English) teaches at University of Houston. I have been searching for information on my great great grandmother and grandfather for two years. We had no written history in our family, just a lot of tid bits pasted down by word of mouth. I thought that the names I was searching for were L.P. Osborn and Mrs. Jane Scaggs. However, there were certain people that I had heard about that I couldn't find in the census records - Monroe Osborn for one.

Today I accidentally stumbled on this site and many of the questions I was at a dead end with have been answered. I never could figure out who Monroe's mother was, since L.P. and Jane Scaggs Osborn only had two surviving children - my great grandfather Jessie Osborn and his older brother, Lee. The funny thing is that Clarence Gregory (1888-1967) lived just down the road from us when I was growing up. The house is gone now, but I still remember it - it was a stately, Victorian-looking home.

I would appreciate any information that you could provide on Amanda (Cornelia) Gregory and her marriage to L.P. Osborn. I would think that she is buried in Macedonia Cemetery, but I'll have to check that out.

Thanks,

Bonnie Osborn Briggs

I have been researching my Gregory family roots for a long time and have a mysterious Gregory. His name was Eliphes (yes, I have posted about him on your forum). His whole name was: Eliphes Berry Gregory.
Is it possible he is the son of Berry Adolphus Gregory? I find it very coincidental that he was named Eliphes..if you look at the history of Berry Adolphus.
Eliphes was in his mid 50's in 1913 when he married my great grandmother so his age would have been right. He was also called "E.B. Gregory". A record of his marriage to my great grandmother appears in the Giles County court records. Also, I have a picture of him on their wedding day.

Could you please look up the name of Berry Adolphus child..I see you show no record of when this child died. Is it possible he simply left the area before 1900?

Thanking you ahead of time,

Subject: the first 'Isaac Gregory' off the boat?
From: J. Kyle Gregory

Dear Friends,

While doing some internet searches I came across an Isaac Gregory, who left Bristol, England for Barbados in 1661, as an indentured servant, sent by contract with an agent by the name of Thomas Workeman.

I suppose this is the same Isaac Gregory that, according to the 'prologue' section of the Ben Gregory's family history, arrived in Virginia between 1654 and 1663. Of course the connection between this Isaac and our 'Isaac the Elder' is purely conjecture.

I wonder, however, does anyone know more about this Isaac that left Bristol in 1661? Unfortunately his place of origin is not indicated in the Bristol register.

Thanks for any insights anyone may have.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply. My husband did receive an invitation and plans to be at the reunion. He is a good acquaintance with Gene Gregory (they fondly call each other "Cuz") and particularly wants to make the cookout at Gene's house.

To tell you a little of us, my husband, who goes by Maurice, finished UHS in 1959 and graduated from Clemson in 1962 with a degree in Poultry Science. He is a commodities broker with AG Edwards here in our place of residence, Gainesville, GA. (Yes, he makes most of the Clemson home games and has been an IPTAY member for dog years!)

I work in Atlanta (120 mile round trip commute each day) and am bureau chief of the PR Newswire office located in Buckhead. If you like to manage your own stock portfolio and keep up with what is happening with your public companies, you really should visit our website: www.prnewswire.com. We distribute news for over 70% of the Fortune 1000 companies and many other organizations to boot. I finished UHS in 1962 and obtained a college degree (N. GA College, part of the UGA system) while also having a family. It made for interesting times, let me tell you. We have two sons and four splendid grandchildren who we try to spoil as much as we can.

We've both been away from Union since we finished high school. I guess you could say we went out into the big old world and never looked back. At least for a while we didn't look back. We now find ourselves reminiscing on a regular basis, which I suppose comes along with the territory once you pass fifty. My husband's mother, Lillian M. Gregory is still alive and is in Oakmont assisted living, so my husband is back and forth to Union at least on a montly basis. While the family farm has passed into the three children's hands (my husband, Sandra and Elizabeth), there are no plans to sell it any time soon.

That's about it for us. We're plain, hard working folks, like the stock that bred us, and while we've lived other places, Union will always be "home."

Cheers....

I have not had any time to do any further research -- I think there may be more information on my line in the Chester County records, but it is difficult to make time to get down there. Will there be a place in the 2nd edition for "disconnected" sections of the Gregory family; that is, lines we believe are connected, but we can't find the link? When is the deadline for the 2nd ed?
Thanks much.

Yours,
Jean

Thanks for the reply. I know they must be connected in some way, due to the proximity and parallel migration. I'm going to do some investigating into this line and verify the information. Mike didn't know how these people were documented. I keep getting side tracked on my many other lines. I will get back to you occasionally if I come up with anything. I have been in the web site. There are so many people. The wills are interesting.
Thanks again,
LISA GRISSOM
