The birth and death dates of Lettice Gregory are unknown. Calculations, from her age shown at
the 1850 and 1860 censuses, lead us to believe she was born ca. 1801. A tombstone in the
Gregory Family Cemetery, bearing no dates, marks the grave of "Liddie" Gregory. It is believed
(though evidence is circumstantial) that Lettice died between 6 July 1863 and 12 September 1864
and is buried in that grave. If the grave does not belong to her, it can only be assumed that
her grave is unmarked or the tombstone destroyed.
The following petition is proof that Jehu's sons, Jeremiah Benjamin and Andrew Jackson preceded
him in death. So indicate in each of their information that they died before 1857 and after the
death of their father.
Jehu Gregory (30 October 1798-11 July 1852),
son of Gerard and Freelove Gregory, married Lettice Gregory, daughter of Jeremiah and Lettice
Young Gregory, probably in 1822. The date is calculated from their eldest child's birth
year, Emeline Perry Gregory was born ca. 1823.

UNION DISTRICT
IN THE COURT OF ORDINARY
To B. Johnson Esq., Ordinary for Union District
L. Gregory
18 November 1857
Waties T. Gregory, the other son referred to in the deed, sold the remaining half of the tract
to T.J. Jones on 12 September 1864
A deed
(Union County Deed Book Z18, p. 599)
signed by her son, Jehu C. Gregory,
indicates she was still living at the date of the instrument (6 July 1863). This deed records
the sale to T.J. Jones of half a tract of 145 acres "whereon my mother, Mrs. Lettice Gregory,
widow of Jehu Gregory, deceased, now lives and has a lifetime estate; and, at her death, to be
equally divided between W.T. Gregory and the said, Jehu C. Gregory ..."
The 1850 Census of Agriculture indicates Jehu owned 416 acres of land. He owned five horses,
three mules, four milch cows, five head of cattle, eleven sheep and thirty swine. The value
of his real estate was $4160; the value of his farm implements, $250; and the value of his
livestock, $511.
Jehu and Lettice Gregory were the parents of ten known children. Their birth dates (in some cases)
are not available or (in other cases) conflict. For this reason, they may or may not be presented
in order of birth. The children were: Emeline Perry; Mary Elizabeth; Nancy Macey (or Macon);
Jeremiah Benjamin; Andrew Jackson; Sarah Ann Catherine; Jehu Christopher; Cecily Cornelia,
Waties Turrentine; and Harvey Simpson.
Emeline Perry Gregory (ca. 1823-?), the first daughter of Jehu and Lettice Gregory, married Charles Young. Brent Holcomb, researcher of the Young and Humphries families, lists Charles' date of birth as 1814 and his death date as ca. 1882. Charles and Emeline are thought to be buried at Bogansville Baptist Church. Three graves, located in the same area of the cemetery, are marked Charles Young, E.Y., and B.Y. It is believed that these are the graves of Charles, Emeline and their son, Benjamin; but has not been conclusively proven. Charles and Emeline Perry Gregory Young were the parents of four known children: J. Simpson; Nancy Ann; J. Christopher; and Benjamin.
J. Simpson Young (ca. 1846-1 October 1862, Frederick City, Maryland) served as a Private in Company A, 13th Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers.
Nancy Ann (Nanny) Young (ca. 1846-?) married Jared W.E. Young. Jared served in Company A, 18th South Carolina Infantry, CSA. They are also buried at Bogansville. No dates appear on their tombstones.
J. Christopher Young was born 19 October 1851.
Benjamin Young was born ca. 1856.
Mary Elizabeth Gregory was the second daughter of Jehu and Lettice. According to Jehu's will, she married John R. Nail (Neal?). No further record of this family is known.
Nancy Macon (Macey) Gregory (30 April 1822
-24 July 1916), third daughter of Jehu and Lettice Gregory, was born in Union County
and died in Broesebeck, Limestone County, Texas. She married Gerard Singleton Gregory
(6 April 1819-26 July 1887), son of Isaac "Lipham" Gregory.
Gerard and Nancy disappeared from Union County after the 1870 census and later were found in
Limestone County, Texas. Their children are listed in the section devoted to Gerard Singleton
Gregory, located within the John Gregory line.
Additional information about the family was provided by Betty B. Jackson of Huber Heights, Ohio.
Jeremiah Benjamin Gregory (ca. 1829-?) was still living with Jehu and Lettice in 1850.
Andrew Jackson Gregory (ca. 1832-?) was also living at home in 1850. Both Jeremiah Benjamin and Andrew Jackson were deceased by 1857 (information gleaned from Jehu's estate packet located in Box 36, p. 25, Union County).
Sarah Ann Catherine Gregory (ca. 1835-?) was still at home in 1860. Nothing further is known of her.
Jehu Christopher Gregory (ca. 1835-1865),
son of Jehu and Lettice Gregory, was a Private in the Seventh Regiment, Company E, South
Carolina Cavalry when he died of disease at Appomattox.
He was listed as thirty years old in the records of the War Between the States located in the
Union County Probate Office. (See Confederate Pension Applications Register.)
Jehu Christopher married Charlotte C. -?- (28 August 1841-6 May 1907). She is buried at
Putnam Church Cemetery, Union. They had three children, all under five years of age at the
time of their father's death: Kate; Sarah (Sallie); and Susan Eliza. The 1870 census
indicates Kate was born in 1861. The 1900 census lists Sarah's birth as March, 1862; and
Susan Eliza's as February, 1864.
The 1880 census reflects that Charlotte, Kate, Sarah and Susan lived in four different homes.
Charlotte lived alone and lists her occupation as a seamstress (p.445). Kate
was a companion for a woman named Sallie Jones in Goshen Hill (p. 500).
Sarah was a farm laborer with a Bailey family at Cross Keys (p. 456).
Susan was a housekeeper for the George A. Anderson family (p. 446).
Kate Gregory (ca. 1861), eldest daughter of Jehu Christopher and Charlotte C. Gregory, disappears after the 1880 census.
Sarah (Sallie) Gregory (March 1862) married, first: J.S. Gasaway (January 1863) ca. 1888. Charlotte lived with this couple in 1900. J.S. and Sallie had no children at that time. It is suspected that J.S. Gasaway died and "Sallie" Gregory Gasaway married, second: John G. Goings. Two persons buried beside Charlotte bear these names. John G. Goings died 29 December 1928 and Sallie Goings died 12 October 1931.
Susan Eliza Gregory (February 1864), the third child of Jehu Christopher and Charlotte C. Gregory, married S.A. Gregory late in 1880 or early in 1881. Their first child, Martha, was born in October 1881. Their other children (as listed on p. 159 of the 1900 census of Union County) were: William, January 1883; Ellen, October 1886; Clara, March 1891; Maggie, November 1893; and Lois, September 1899. The census indicates three children were deceased in 1900. These could be the "Gregory infants" buried in Putnam Cemetery. The only date indicated on this plot is 1896.
Cecily Cornelia Gregory (6 January 1839 -29 November 1907), eighth child of Jehu and Lettice Gregory, apparently did not marry. She rests in Mount Tabor Church Cemetery.
Waties Turrentine Gregory (October 1840, Union
County, S.C.-ca. 1900, Groesbeck, Limestone County, Texas), son of Jehu and Lettice
Gregory, enlisted for Confederate Service in Company A, 18th Regiment, Infantry, in
January 1862. He was discharged at Camp Guerin in May 1862. The reason given for this
discharge was "over-age." This must have been a mistake because all records indicate he
was only 22 years old at the time.
He married Mary -?- (1840). After the War Between the States, the couple and some of their
children moved to Personsville, Limestone County, Texas in a wagon train after 1870. The couple
later moved to Shiloh in 1880 on the old James farm and from there to Big Hill, Texas where the
land was fertile and rich. The family had one of the first country homes built in Big Hill; the
lumber used in the structure was from Alexandria, Louisiana, being shipped by rail to Mart, then
to Big Hill by wagon.
Waties and Mary were the parents of six children: James Henry; Benjamin T; Luther Eugene;
Sarah Susan; N. Allace; John W.
James Henry Gregory (February 1860) was born in Union County according to the 1860 census.
Benjamin T. Gregory (July 1863) was born in Union. He married Julia -?-.
NOTE: Additional information regarding Luther Eugene was provided by Bette Jackson, Price J. Gregory, Colbert E. Gregory.
Luther Eugene Gregory (7 November 1865-26 November 1943
was born in Union. He married, first: Eliza Grace (2 October 1866-29 September 1906),
daughter of Thomas B. and Imogene F. Price Grace, on 17 August 1884 in Groesbeck, Texas.
In 1908, after moving to Groesbeck, Limestone County, Texas, Luther met and married Frances
Kathleen Galeo Luton (1875-1921), the daughter of Kathleen Galleo. The family called Frances
'Ma Fanny'.
In 1905, while living in Big Hill, Luther went to Dallas, TX and bought a Jackson two-cylinder
car. The next morning the family drove to chuch and broke up the Service. That was the 39th car
in Limestone County.
In 1910, Luther's family moved to Richland, Navarr County, Texas where Luther bought one-half
of the Stewart's place (186 acres). Luthe also had a little ice cream factory at home and
he deliverd ice cream to the Hashop Drugstore in Corsicana, Tesas, each afternoon on the 4 PM
passenger train. He also owned a small zoo.
After his children were grown with family of their own, Luther moved back to Groesbeck where
he died. He is buried in the Fort Parker Cemetery because the road was so mudddy that they
could not get to Big Hill where Eliza, the mother of his children, was buried. His second wife,
Frances is buried beside him.
Luther Eugene's wife, Eliza Grace, was born in Henry County, Alabama. She died one day after
the birth of their youngest child. They were the parents of eleven children, all born in Big Hill,
