Eugenia Gregory (ca. 1849), first child of Jeremiah and Ann, was not married as of 1880. She appears in Jonesville as the unmarried mother of two children, Laura (age four), and William (age five).
Isbell (Elizabeth) Gregory, Jeremiah's second child, is in the house with Eugenia in 1880. She is also unmarried and the mother of a son, Solomon, born in April of that year.
Samuel Gregory (12 January 1866) was the eldest son of Jeremiah and Sallie Gregory. He is living in Pinckney Township, Union County, in 1900. His wife, Ella (May 1875) is apparently his second wife, as the census says the couple had been married six years and she was the mother of one child. There are two children in the household. The eldest, Aubrey, was born in May 1890. The youngest, Caurey (Carrie?), a daughter, was born March 1896.
Martha Gregory, second child of Jeremiah and Sallie, was born ca. 1867. There is little known of her.
Sallie Gregory (9 December 1869-3 March 1960), third child of Jeremiah and Sallie, is buried at Fairview Baptist Church. She married M. Gilliam Koon. Their issue: Emma Dora.
EMMA DORA KOON (20 December 1893-28 December 1935) married James Carviel Ivey (28 February 1887-26 May 1944). Their issue: Lillian Ivey, 6 August 1913-12 December 1949; and Lewis Gilliam.
Lewis Gilliam Ivey (19 March 1919-23 August 1969) was a veteran of World War II and had a daughter, Helen Ivey.
Barton B. (Bee) Gregory (7 June 1870-28 June 1951), the youngest child of Jeremiah and Sallie Gregory, married Nola Ivey, daughter of Simpson and Emma Bailey Ivey. Barton and Nola are buried in Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery. Their issue: Eunice; Jeremiah Simpson; Russell; Lillie; Lonnie; Eloise; Allen; Daniel; Benjamin; and Ferrell C. Late in life, Barton B. Gregory married Era Hodge Horne of Union.
EUNICE GREGORY (21 December 1985-3 November 1924), first child of Barton B. and Nola, married S. Cammilus Garner, son of Samuel and Nannie Garner. Eunice is buried at Mount Joy Baptist Church. Their issue: Everette and Nannie Nola.
JEREMIAH SIMPSON (JERRY) GREGORY (20 November 1897), second child of Barton B. and Nola, married Maggie Workman. Their issue: Eugenia, Martha, and Carol Jerry.
RUSSELL GREGORY (14 September 1899-7 January 1972), third child of Barton B. and Nola, married: first, Maudie Jett (13 October 1901-28 July 1944); and second, Ruth Sanders (10 November 1907). Maudie Jett is buried at the Fairview Baptist Church and Russell is buried in the Memorial Garden Cemetery. His children: James; Sarah; Lucille; W.T.; and Shelly.
EDDIE GREGORY (16 July 1901-8 March 1928), fourth child of Barton B. and Nola, married James Lemuel Vaughan (27 March 1889-3 March 1965), son of William and Rhoda Goings Vaughan. Their issue: Aileen; Frances; William; Doris; and Elizabeth.
LILLIE GREGORY (9 March 1903), fifth child of Barton B. and Nola, married Furman Orr. Their issue: Harold.
LONNIE GREGORY (16 April 1905), sixth child of Barton B. and Nola, married: first, Azalee Bratton (22 October 1919-16 October 1961). She is buried at Philippi Baptist Church. The name of his second wife is not known. The children of Lonnie Gregory are: Nancy; Betty; and Lucille.
ELOISE GREGORY (14 December 1906), seventh child, married Vernon Garner, son of Samuel R. and Nannie Garner. Their issue: Walter.
ALLEN GREGORY (16 January 1909), the eighth child, married Mamie Cannon. Their issue: Robert; Bruce; and Elsie.
DANIEL GREGORY (30 May 1911-19 November 1914), the ninth child, is buried at the Fairview Baptist Church, Union County, South Carolina.
BENJAMIN GREGORY (28 April 1913), tenth child of Barton B. and Nola, married Laverne Moore. Their issue: Rachel; Benny Frances; and Grace.
FERRELL C. GREGORY (16 November 1915), last child of Barton B. and Nola, married: first, Arthur H. Ivey (7 September 19l5-30 October 1959), son of Ben Clifford and Anna Harris Ivey. Arthur is buried at Philippi Baptist Church, Union. She married: second, Washington Palmer. Ferrell and Arthur's issue: Judy, Susan, Joan and Vickie.
Ansel G. Gregory (ca. 1818) was the third child of Edward M. and Nancy Gregory. His wife was Paulina -?- (ca. 1825). The known children of Ansel and Paulina: Thomas; Margaret; John; Mary; George; Nancy; and Ellen.
An Ansel Gregory is buried at Mount Tabor Cemetery. His dates conflict with those available from census records, but are recorded as a matter of record because the ages on the census could very well be wrong. The Ansel buried at Mount Tabor was born in 1800 and died in 1874. A search of the records of Union County reveals only one Ansel there in the 1800's, therefore, the Ansel at Mount Tabor could very well be Edward's son. There is no record of Paulina. A George Gregory (who might be the son of Ansel and Paulina) is also buried at Mount Tabor. His dates are 19 May 1853-18 August 1913.
Tillman Gregory (ca. 1826) was the fourth child of Edward and Nancy. He appears in the 1850 census with Susan, age 15, and Starks, age 18. No relationship is given. He is a planter and disappears after the 1850 census.
Sarah Gregory (ca. 1820), daughter of Edward and Nancy, married Thomas French. They lived in the Santuc Community in 1870. No other record of this family has been found. Their children were: Mary S., ca. 1854; Mandana (Amanda?), ca. 1856; and Thomas, ca. 1858.
Margaret Gregory (ca. 1823-5 February 1885), sixth child of Edward and Nancy, did not marry. On 12 June 1865, Nancy executed a trust deed in which Margaret agreed to care for her while she (Nancy) lived. Margaret is buried at the Gregory Family Cemetery.
Solomon Gregory (8 March 1826-30 January 1910) was
the seventh child of Edward M. and Nancy. He married Mary -?- (8 March 1834-24 April 1894).
Mary is said to have been a Mitchell.
In 1850, Solomon lived with his parents and was twenty-four years old. In 1860, he and Mary
are married and have the following Gregory young people living with them: Adolphus, Andy,
Amanda and Lawrence (or Lance). These young people (ages 21, 16, 15 and 14, respectively)
are too old to be the children of Solomon and Mary.
In 1870, he and his wife are alone, but she is called "Lucy". In 1880, he is listed as
"Saul", Mary is "Mary" again; and they have a nephew, Ezell Gregory, age 14, with them.
The year 1900 finds Saul as head of a household consisting of three others: David and Martha
Mitchell, who had been married two years and had one son, Judson, age 1. David and Martha
are listed as nephew and niece. David was born in April 1881, and Martha in November 1881.
Jarrett (Jerry) Gregory (ca. 1827) was the eighth
child of Edward and Nancy. His wife was Anna -?-. Jane Haney, age 23, and Roxy Prisock, age 11,
are with the Gregorys in 1860. No relationship is given. In 1870, Jarrett and Anna and
children are residing with bachelor brother, Thomas, mother, Nancy, and sister, Margaret (Peggy).
In 1880, the family is out and on its own again.
Their communal living in 1870 was probably due to the ravaged state of the economy in the Post-Bellum
county. They are known to have six children: William, ca. 1857; Mahalia, ca. 1859; John E., ca. 1860;
Gerard James, ca. 1863; Mary, ca. 1872; and Nancy A., ca. 1877.
William H. Gregory (ca. 1830), was the ninth child of Edward and Nancy. His wife was Susan -?-. No record of William is found in Union County after 1860. Their known children were: William, ca. 1851; Cela, ca. 1853; Edward, ca. 1855; and Marion T.
Marion T. Gregory (29 July 1856-19 February 1938) was born in the Brushy Creek Section, Chester County. His wife, Elmira -?- (15 July 1862-29 October 1931), is buried there as well.
Edward Harrison Gregory, Jr. (8 November 1833-1 May 1892) was the youngest child of Edward and Nancy. His wife was Jane -?- (1 September 1831-7 July 1890). Both are buried in what is termed the Gregory Cemetery #2, behind the home of Mauda and Vera Gregory near Fairview Church, Union County. Edward and Jane were probably married about 1857, as their eldest child, Edward, was one year old in the 1860 census. Also listed in the 1860 census is an infant, Cornelius, age 3 months. Edward (listed as Harrison in this census) and Jane apparently changed their minds about the name or the census enumerator recorded the child's name incorrectly because he was really Charles N. Gregory. This family is not to be found in any census after 1860. It is possible that they moved away after the War and returned. There is no marked grave for the son, Edward, but Charles N. Gregory (2 March 1860-24 December 1894) rests beside his parents.
Isaac Gregory was also the son of Edward and Nancy Gregory. Though numerous leads have been followed, all efforts at identifying him have been unsuccessful.
SARAH (SALLY) GREGORY was the sixth child of John and Margaret Gregory. The only record available on Sarah is a Deed of Gift from her father to her son. Within this document, John gives to Thomas Gregory, grandson, "son of my daughter, Sarah Gregory, fifty acres between Edward's plantation and my old plantation". Jeremiah and Tillman Gregory, John's sons, witnessed the deed which was executed 13 May 1812 and recorded 18 July 1812. The dower was relinquished by Rhoda, wife of John.
JOHN JEREMIAH GREGORY (ca. 1790-18 January 1863) was the eighth child of John and Margaret Gregory. His wife was Naomi Steen (ca. 1790).
In 1850, Jeremiah was listed as a planter with real estate valued at $1,800. He owned 300 acres of land (75 improved, 225 unimproved), three horses, four milk cows, three "other cattle", two working oxen, twelve sheep and eight swine. The value of his livestock was $350. Nancy was the only child at home and was listed as sixteen years old. In 1860, Jeremiah and Naomi are alone. His real estate is now valued at $3,000 and his personal property at $500.
Jeremiah and Naomi were the parents of at least five children: Jefferson; Tresvant; Pearciful; Nancy; and Andrew Ferdinand. There is some evidence that a daughter, Naomi, died before her father.
Jefferson (John Jefferson) Gregory (ca. 1814, Union County, S.C.) was the eldest known child of Jeremiah and Naomi. His wife was Jane -?- (December 1823). The couple had seven children, of whom five lived until adulthood: Charles, ca. 1844; William, 1848; Virginia C., January 1851; Jane Aurelia (Amelia), January 1851; Nancy, ca. 1853; Mary, ca. 1857; and James E.
James E. Gregory (28 May 1858-16 July 1921) married Ellen A. -?- (6 December 1866-24 August 1928). James E. and Ellen are buried at Rosemont Cemetery, Union, South Carolina.
Tresvant Gregory (13 August 1822-30 June 1899), second child of Jeremiah and Naomi, was a farmer and carpenter. The name, Tresvant, is unusual, but it is an old and respected French Huguenot name. Tresvant's wife was Lavinia Koon (20 May 1826-12 October 1899). He was a Confederate veteran. Both are buried at Beulah Baptist Church, Union County. Their children: John Henderson; Robert G.; Mary; Nancie; Sophia Virginia; Laura; and Ferdinand.
Sophia, age 19, Laura, age 16, and Ferdinand, age 8, were at home in 1880. There is no information on the remainder of the family after 1880.
John Henderson Gregory (3 March 1852-16 October 1924) married Emma Eubanks (1 March 1858-5 November 1939). Both are buried at Beulah. According to the 1900 census, John Henderson and Emma were married ca. 1875 and had four children. Two were still alive in 1900. In 1880, there were two children in the home: John T., age 3, and Sallie, age 1. There is a child, Frances (1880-1883) buried at Beulah. She is probably one of the two deceased children. Neither John T. nor Sallie were with their parents in 1900. A son, Preston (October 1890), does appear.
Pearciful (Pearcy) Gregory (dates unknown) was the third child of Jeremiah and Naomi. The little that is known about her is found in Jeremiah's will, from which is quoted:
"I give to my son, Tresvant Gregory, my Negro girl, named Dealy, together with her future issue and increase, and also the sum of one hundred dollars, in trust, nevertheless for the use, benefit and behoof of my daughter, Pearciful Kerk, wife of Benjamin F. Kerk, for and during her natural life and, at her death, to go to such child or children as she may leave surviving her, the child or children of the deceased parent taking the share to which the parent would have been entitled if living."
Pearciful doesn't show up in the 1850 census, so it must be assumed that she was married (or the enumerator missed her) at that time. Benjamin Kerk does not appear either.
Nancy Gregory (3 May 1830-2 March 1899) was the fourth child of Jeremiah and Naomi Gregory. She is buried beside her husband, William D. Steen (1819-1 July 1864), in the Steen Family Cemetery, Union County. He is said to have been a casualty of the War Between the States. Jeremiah remembers William and Nancy in his will, as follows:
"I give to my friend, William Steen, my Negro girl, named Martha, together with her future increase and issue, and one hundred acres of land of the tract whereon I now live to be laid off so as to include my residence and outbuildings, beginning at the corner just above Neel's Creek Meeting House, thence along Solomon Gregory's Line until it comes to the Meeting House Spring Branch, thence down the branch to Harrison Gregory's corner, thence along the line between Harrison Gregory's land and mine to some point north of my residence and outbuildings, in trust, nevertheless, for the use and benefit and behoof of my daughter, Nancy Steen, wife of William Steen, for and during her natural life, and, at her death, to go to such children as she may leave surviving her, the child or children of a deceased parent to take the share to which the parent would have been entitled if living".
Andrew Ferdinand (Verdy) Gregory (15 September 1831-21 May 1905) was the fifth child of Jeremiah and Naomi Gregory. His wife was Charlotte -?- -(22 September 1831-29 August 1899). They are buried at Hebron Baptist Church. Their children: R. Gilliam; Robert G.; and Jim. A child, Mary Ann Savage (age 5), lived with the family, in 1860, but was gone in 1870.
R. Gilliam Gregory (1 January 1854-20 January 1926) married Sarah Ellen (16 May 1859-20 February 1934). Their children: Clarence; Mary, 1878; and T. Monroe.
CLARENCE GREGORY (21 April 1876) married Cornelia W -?- (15 April 1881-8 November 1951) in 1900. They are buried at Gilead Baptist Church.
T. MONROE GREGORY (12 December 1879-11 December 1954) is buried at Hebron Baptist Church, Union County.
TILLMAN GREGORY (ca. 1795-1840) was the tenth child of John and Margaret Gregory. He married Lydia (ca. 1798-1880). Lydia was listed as Lida in the 1860 census. She and Tillman are probably buried in the Gregory Cemetery at Santuc. There is a stone marked "Liddie" which has no dates. It is not certain this is Lydia, but probable. Their children: Margaret; Addison; and Wesley.
In February 1819, John Gregory granted to Tillman, 100 acres of land "one half of 200 acres whereon the said John Gregory now lives". This was part of a tract of land granted to Isaac Gregory, Sr. by William Bull, Governor of South Carolina, dated 20 June 1768 and located on a south branch of Brown's Creek.
Addison Gregory married Deby Ann -?- ca. 1855 and had ten children: Margaret; Cammilus, 1858; John, 1862; Gilliam, 1864; Nathaniel and Martha (twins), 1868; Atterson (Addison), 1871; Elizabeth, 1873; Antoinette, 1877; and Starks, February 1878.
Margaret Gregory (1856), Addison and Deby's daughter, did not marry. She is listed with her mother in 1870. In 1880 she is the head of her house and has a nephew, Simon (age 18), and an aunt, Patty Bratton (age 69), living with her.
JARRED GREGORY, eleventh child of John and Margaret, married Mary Turner and had three children: Lucyann, 1824; Ferdinand (Verdy), 1828; and Harrison, 1833.
BENJAMIN GREGORY (ca. 1774-1 March 1817), a possible twelfth child of John and Margaret, is buried at Cane Creek Quaker Cemetery. He is not proven, but is believed to be John's son. He is buried beside John's son, John. Other members of John's family are buried there as well.
WILLIAM E. GREGORY, was probably the thirteenth
child of John and Margaret Gregory.
